The One Salty Laughter Tear

17 Jan

This one is special, because I have already written about everyone – father, sister, husband, children.. So, when it was time to show my love for the child bearer, I figured what better way than to ask her to scribble a few lines for my humble blog.. The outcome? A mixture of excerpts taken from what my mother wrote for me.. To sound every bit like a seasoned writer, I have to mention I have her verbal permission to use her material in the below SEMI-fictional.. :)

Karina - Once upon a time ago

Karina - Once upon a time ago

“Mommie.. mommie.. Hot!! Hot!!..” 2 year old Kyle was running behind Karina while screaming at the top of his lungs at 7:15am in the morning..

“Gosh darn it, it is just 7 in the morning Kyle, why don’t you sleep a little longer?? I am sure Maria put you to sleep very early and washed off her hands! I am sorry Chaz, but I guess no more date nights for us.. I cannot give up my lazy late mornings on the weekends for anything!”

“Ut-oh Kyle, yes mommie is hot, but this morning she is hot with temper!” Let’s get out of bed and go to your room while she sleeps a little longer”, Chaz grabbed the hot coffee that Kyle was referring to from her and stepped out of the bedroom closing the door behind him, still smiling.. Karina stayed in bed and dialed her momma who was 10,000 miles away in Bangladesh probably getting ready for dinner..

“Oh mom, what can I tell you, I have started hating weekends now! Kyle cannot seem to sleep past 6:30am and it is a pain my rear end! Mom, we were super excited about our date night yesterday, and felt that it was one that we had truly earned..! We had dinner and a few minutes of quiet time for ourselves! Heavenly! But, we crashed into the real world of baby so hard that I can’t seem to remember how great I was feeling just 12 hours ago!”

“Come on, give yourself a break, thinking of those moments might cheer you up! Also, Kyle might be hungry..”

“Talking to you is a waste of time momma, you will end up taking Kyle’s side anyway.. You will not understand how demanding my life is! Remember mom you were completely smitten by the idea of motherhood at 19, so you did not see any life outside of your two girls and your husband..”

The line goes mute..

“Yeah, yeah, sorry, I meant your two girls, and DADDY! Oh, let me go now, bye!”

Karina was relentless about how relentless she perceived her mother to be.. So, she picked up the conversation on Sunday, when she knew her dad will be an earshot from the phone while she was talking to her mother.. She had to be respectful.. very respectful.. She started off politely this time..

“Mom, you are just 50 mommie, do you know in America, especially in Florida, I hear 87 year old folks driving cars..!! If that is not eye popping news what else is?”

“Have you wondered why you had to hear that on the news? If it was business as usual, I suspect they would not be on TV! Also, have you received any paper greetings this year..? Do you remember you would cut the flowers and quotes out of the post cards and greetings that your father would receive on New Year’s day and make posters out of them?? All that might seem silly to you now, but that was great fun for you and your sister! Maybe Kyle will not disturb you if you can give him some small scissors and a few of those postcards!”

“Oh mom, you should start writing funnies, hand written post cards?!! Ha ha.. Oh, do you remember Alicia, Joey’s mom, she rear ended someone on her way back home yesterday evening..! I am not surprised, she is ALWAYS on the phone with someone or the other, never paying attention to Joey while picking up or dropping off that poor guy at school.. Ha, how is the timing so perfect I ask? What kind of a mom is she?! Sheeeesh!!!”

“I remember those days when you would wait eagerly on the steps outside the front door for me to come back from school.. You would finish eating your snack that I set out on the table that morning and feed your sister and take care of her till I came back! About that girl, maybe she works the phones! You, you still working 14 hours a day?! Kyle will miss you and your nurturing..”

“Mom, why does this have to be about me all the time?! How does working and maintaining a blog on the personal front have to be the same as not being responsible and taking care of my own child? You are sympathetic to a stranger, but I can’t carry on a decent conversation with you before you start giving me lectures about how to raise my child!”

The line goes mute..

“Mom, chores at home, deadlines at work, maintaining a social circle, setting up play groups, having a hobby – writing, and still having a few minutes of decent face time with the husband in the evening to chat up the day’s events.. All this takes effort and planning!”

“And to add to that, Chaz has been working hard at office for a presentation, so has zero contribution towards dish washing and laundry loads these days! The agreement for having a child at this point in our lives was with an understanding to share his responsibility equally and not one person being completely overwhelmed with raising them – in this case it is me!”

Karina did not wait for a goodbye and did not think of the conversation much afterward.. A two line email 15 minutes later from her mother brought guilt and sadness…

Honey, it read, I miss you both each day, every day! I do not want that to happen to you.. I want you to make enough memories with your little ones to last a lifetime.. Love you with all my heart, momma.

That night she did NOT beg Chaz with her usual bedtime sweet talk, “Honey, don’t stimulate his brain, with so much activity on the phone and TV, he will not sleep soon.. Take that damn Iphone away from him!!”

She called her mother, clutching Kyle close to her as he dozed off later, “Mom, I was thinking about what you said.. For Kyle, food and a warm hug seem to make his day! Thank you!”

Kyle - 2009

Kyle - 2009

“We will start having dinner at the table again, just like the old days.. same table, same number of people.. each night! A great chunk of golden memories I made with my sister over food and school..”

Karina’s mother listened, and together they cried, they laughed.. She told her, how she had been a multi-tasker in her own right.. Taking care of her husband’s family of 10 people – the in-laws.. married at 17 with no “online” daughter-in-law help to refer to..

Soon Karina realized that she was a multitasker by virtue of self infliction.. the Meetups, the Facebooks, the blogs, the playgroups, the countless todo lists that I filled her day editing and copying from one to another.. they will have to wait.. Life was just as simple as that.. Kyle comes first.. The demands of her life seemed to evaporate in front of her mother’s genuine life-size situations that she maneuvered through her entire life..

As they talked, she confessed, how embarrassed she was when she opened the envelope that her grandfather gave her as a wedding gift – a cash bundle and a note which read, “All marital problems get resolved in the bedroom, this is the golden rule to bliss.” That day she had felt that she belonged to a family of freaks!! Ha ha..

“Sweetheart, do you know why you feel so connected with me today?! There are millions of cultures in the world, hundreds of countries with millions of mothers in them – but there is only one feeling like a labor pain and every tear that a mother sheds for laughter or sadness has one thing in common.. – they are ALL salty!”

That was Karina’s mother, even while she struggled with a great set of roller coaster emotions, Karina never found out if she had ever wondered what liposuction was, what the side effects of babies watching too much TV were, or obsessing about how to get rid of her co-sleeping kids from her bed into their own bedrooms – the list was long and exhausting.. The principle she would reveal was as simple as KISS – Keep it simple stupid..

Ha, who would have guessed, Karina had the capability of over-complicating the simplest of math problems in childhood..

What time is it?

What time is it?

Mom pointed out the positive aspects that were common.. A supportive husband who was trying to accommodate and fit in into their ambitious world of love, emotions, aspirations and children.. As the time and space gathered for them at the end of the day dwindled, men have been consistently adapting to women’s changing personalities and outlook and trying to keep up with their own understanding of fulfilling families needs everywhere..

The phone call ended, it was time to start over! Family comes first!

The next day at work, Monday afternoon, she pinged Chaz during one of those 2pm wake-me-up-I-am-so-sleepy-at-work-now chat sessions that they both would automatically tune into.. Something that her mother says she missed during her days, where she had to wait the whole day to keep her father up to date about her day and her thoughts contained for around dinner time and later.. Workplace internet was such a blessing she giggled to herself and enthusiastically started typing..

c. Nah, not up to the mark.. “

kacchao99: Hello.. BUZZ.. :)

Chaz: Let us talk about everything tonight.

Chaz: I am screen sharing on the projector here at the Headquarters building in downtown. Thanks for your patience.”

The multi-tasking diva that Karina was, she absentmindedly forgot about the important presentation that Chaz was presenting at the NET Builder 1.2 WebEx Conference, a meet that had attracted 8000 Information Technology professionals from outside of Atlanta.

Without blinking an eyelid, Karina then gathered enough courage to “tear up” her online check lists.. She had perceived them now to be more damaging that she thought they were!

Love to my mother who taught me that my boys don’t care where I play ball with them as long as I am there for them and play with them and laugh with them; it doesn’t matter if we are in the house, or in a park, or in a paid admission only play zone in the mall.. or EVEN on an island without food and water..
To you, I promise my love will be without distractions,

So, when it was time to show my love for the child bearer, I figured what better way than to ask her to scribble a few lines for my humble blog..So, the outcome? The below is written as a mixture of excerpts taken from what my mother wrote for me at my request. To sound every bit like a seasoned writer, I have to mention I have her verbal permission to use her material in the below semi-fiction story.”Mommie.. mommie.. Hot!! Hot!!..” 2 year old Kyle was running while screaming at the top of his lungs at 7:15am in the morning..”Gosh darn it, it is just 7 in the morning Kyle, why don’t you sleep a little longer?? I am sure the baby sitter put you to sleep very early so she could get to doing what she enjoyed doing the most instead of taking care of you! I am sorry Chaz, but I guess no more date nights for us.. I cannot give up my late mornings on the weekends for anything!”"Ut-oh Kyle, what have you done..? As day broke that Saturday morning, Karina was hardly in the mood to get up, so she lay in bed and dialed her momma who was 10000 miles away in Bangladesh probably getting ready for dinner..

“Oh mom, what can I tell you, I have started hating weekends now! Kyle cannot seem to sleep past 6:30am and it is a pain my rear end! Mom, we were super excited about our date night yesterday, and felt that it was one that we had truly earned.. We were seriously overwhelmed by the whole diaper changing routines, dishwasher loads, laundry, cleaning, cooking … Uggh.. So, we were so looking forward to it!”

“Yes, yes, of course, we went out, just the two of us, had dinner, and drinks and had a few minutes of quite time for us! Heavenly! But, mom, we crash into reality so hard that I can’t seem to remember how great I was feeling just 12 hours ago!”

“OK, OK, I will try to see the positives.. Thanks, talking to you is a waste of time momma, you will end up taking Kyle’s side anyway.. Bye, I will speak to you later.. You will not understand how demanding my life is! It is just not your generation anymore! Remember mom you got married at 17, so you did not see any life outside of your two girls and your husband..”

“Yeah, yeah, sorry, I meant your two girls, and DADDY! Oh, let me go now, bye!”

“Mother, you are 50, do you know in America, especially in Florida, I hear 87 year old folks driving cars..!! If that is not eye popping news what else is?”

“Have you wondered why you had to hear them on the news? If it was business as usual, I suspect they would be on TV! Do you remember you would cut them flowers and quotes out of the post cards and greetings that your father would receive on New Year’s day and make posters out of them?? All that might seem silly to you now, but they were fun days with you and your sister!”

“Oh mom, you should start writing funnies, you are getting better at pulling my leg under the pretense of cracking me up!”

“By the way, do you remember Alicia, Joey’s mom, she rear ended someone on her way back home yesterday evening..! Do you know something, she is ALWAYS on the phone with someone or the other, giggling, never paying attention to Joey while picking up or dropping off that poor guy at school.. Ha, I wonder how that boy gets treated at home?”

“I remember those days when you would wait for me eagerly on the steps outside the front door for me to come back from school.. You would finish eating your snack that I set out on the table that morning and feed your sister and take care of her till I came back!”

“Oh really, that is so sweet mom, but you never had a cell phone in those days when you would come back from school while we waited eagerly for you.. Maybe you would have used it to call and catch up right around the time you headed home.. He he..”

“That would not happen in a million years, you girls and your generation, your priorities are different.. You want to have it all!”

“Mom, BTW, this morning, I was listening to the news and they were talking about a mother who was not able to curb the appetite of a 2 year old Indonesian boy who smokes 40 cigarettes a day.. The media is spinning it in such a way that the mother is helpless and is unable to control the fricking child on her own and is seeking financial assistance to send him to some sort of addiction therapy.. What kind of a mom is she?!”

“Maybe she is trying her best, but what about you, you still working 14 hours a day?! That is not good for you or Kyle, he will miss you and your nurturing!”

“Mom, why does this have to be about me all the time?! How does working and maintaining a blog on the personal front have to be the same as not being responsible and taking care of my own child? You are sympathetic to a stranger who is in Indonesia, but you don’t have that sympathy factor for me..? I can’t carry on a decent conversation with you without you giving me a lecture about how to raise Kyle!”

“Please don’t slam the phone on me Rach, the fact of the matter is I don’t care about that stranger/Indonesian woman and her child as much as I care deeply about you and the wellbeing of my kin..”

“Mom, I know you made a lot of sacrifices for me, but do you know what it takes to be a career woman in this generation? Chores at home, deadlines at work, maintaining a social circle, setting up play groups, having a hobby – writing, and still having a few minutes of decent face time with the husband in the evening to chat up the day’s events.. All this takes effort and planning momma.. you will not get it! Our demands are different, it is not your generation!”

“Chaz has been working hard at office, but has zero contribution towards dishwashing and laundry loads these days! The agreement for having a child at this point in our lives was with an understanding to share his responsibility equally and not one person being completely overwhelmed with raising them – in this case it is me! Of course you don’t seem to care how much pressure I am under!”

That night I did not beg Chaz with my usual bedtime sweet talk, “Honey, don’t stimulate his brain, with so much activity on the phone and TV, he will not sleep soon.. Take that damn Iphone from him!!”

I called my mother, clutching Kyle close to me as he dozed off, “I told her, I will listen to everything she says.. – that I realise, a child does not have any expectations for playdates or movie nights.. food and sleep and one warm hug would make his day; I will not complain about the diapers.. one day he will be gone, it might be a year before I will make his favorite snack; the Facebook friends and the chatting will wait, friends know and understand, if they don’t, they were never friends to begin with!

I will bring everyone to the table for dinner again, just like the old days; we sat together at the same table at the same time with the same number of people every night for dinner – a great chunk of golden memories I made with my sister over food and school..

The next Saturday, I called in the middle of the night for mother.. She listened and we talked for 6 hours nonstop.. She cried, I cried.. She laughed, I laughed.. She told me, how she was multitasker in her own right.. Taking care of my dad’s family of 10 people – brothers, sisters, the inlaws.. at the young age of 17 with no “online” mother help to refer to.. I realised I was a multitasker by virtue of self infliction.. the meetups, the facebooks, the blogs, the playgroups, the countless todo lists that I fill out each day in three customized checklist engines – they will have to wait.. Life was just as simple as that.. Kyle comes first.. The demands of my life seemed to evaporate in front of her genuine lifesize situations that she manuered through her entire life..

It was the best conversations that I ever had with my mom.. And inevitably in the heat of the moment, if you will, she ended up making a few confessions along the way! She ended up telling her how she was embarrased beyond imagination when she opened the envelope that her grandfather gave her on the day she got married, the envelope had cash as a gift for her wedding and a handwritten note which read, “If you seem to be having problems with your future husband, it is not just a saying, but a proven fact that even the toughest of issues get resolved in the bedroom!” That day she had felt that she belonged to a family of freaks!!

Did you realise something, you just spoke like your own “mother” while talking about your Kyle and yourself? How did that happen, remember, every day you complain that I talk like a granny, which of course, I am one.. Ha ha..

Sweetheart, do you know why you feel so connected with me today?! There are millions of cultures, hundreds of countries with millions of mothers in them – but there is only one feeling like a labor pain and every tear that a mother sheds for laughter or sadness has one thing in common.. – they are salty!

That was Karina’s mother, even if she struggled with life and sets of roller coaster emotions, Karina never found out if she had ever wondered what liposuction was, what the side effects of babies watching too much TV were, or obsessing about how to get rid of her co-sleeping kids from her bed into their own bedrooms – what her next course of action was for the coming nights… the list was long and exhausting.. The principle she would reveal was as simple as KISS – Keep it simple stupid.. Ha, who would have guessed, Karina had the capability of overcomplicating the simplest of math problems in childhood..

As mom and she talked into the afternoon, she told her what they as women and mothers shared further in common.. A supportive husband who was trying to accommodate and fit in into our ambitious world of love, emotions, aspirations and children.. As the time and space gathered for them at the end of the day dwindled, men have been consistently adapting to women’s changing personalities and outlook and trying to keep up with their own understanding of fulfilling families needs everywhere..

The phone call ended, but mother gave Karina a renewed sense of purpose for life in general.. Everything would wait, but not precious time with family she made her realise..

The next morning Karina pinged Chaz during one of those 2pm wake-me-up-I-am-so-sleepy-at-work-now sessions.. Something that her mother says she missed during her days, where she had to wait the whole day to keep her father up to date about her day and her thoughts contained for around dinner time and later..

Little Mo and the Shooting Star

31 Dec

Blog Carnival - Little Mo and the Shooting Star

WRITTEN  BY: Heart

ILLUSTRATED BY: Shafali

***O***

This is the story of Mo. Mo is his name and it is short for Moksh. Mo is a happy little dude.

But lately he was worried. That night was Christmas eve. Staring into the sky, he sobbed silently. Next to him was his favorite stuffed turtle Coca.

Suddenly he saw something that he thought was a shooting star in the sky. He was 8 but he knew what it was, momma had told him, that when you see it and wish for something, you get what you want. So he closed his eyes and wished for a lot of things. He did not have enough time to think of just one must-have, so he prayed for everything.

Home during Christmas

Home during Christmas

The next morning, he did not remember most of what he asked for, but he thought he would wait and see. Santa was too busy and he had very little money for all the kids in the world momma said, but she had also told him that he was a very kind man and he always tried his best. Mo did not know what to make of it.

He crept under the Christmas tree and cleared the lighting to find his most favorite Transformer Bumble Bee standing there inside the yellow wrapping paper. He quickly finished breakfast and played with him all morning. Coca sat in the middle of the living room and watched as Mo thumped and jumped the car on him repeatedly.

The Transformers - Bumblebee

The Transformers - Bumblebee

Mommy gave him his favorite foods to eat, she did not seem to insist on anything, just his regular best foods, fruit snack, chocolate milk, an oatmeal bar, and a cheese toast for lunch?! He was amused. No big, funny looking veggie kebabs or thick spicy chicken pieces. He seemed to like his day.

In the afternoon as he grew tired, he asked if he could go to the zoo instead of taking of the nap. No one ordered him to get under the sheets, they just picked  him up, Bumble Bee and Coca and rushed to the zoo. The giraffes, the elephant and the tiny grasshopper on his jacket were amazing enough to keep him occupied. The thought of getting dragged to a Botanical garden and long waits in lines did cross his mind, so this one seemed to be a special day! And the best part, there were no rules!

Later, Daddy suggested that they should eat out on Christmas, but what was to be open on such a holiday?! One quick check and he found that there was a Disney show at the local Arena with cheese pizza dinner for kids.

Disney on Ice - Toy Story 3

At the show, Mo asked, “Daddy, can I ask Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head to come home?! It will be so much fun!”

“Yes, of course honey, why don’t we go backstage after the show and invite them for a bed time story!”

Sure enough, they had to make space for Mr and Mrs. Potato Head in their car to drive them home.

Mo wondered if there was that one chore that he was supposed to do before bed time every night, waiting for him at home. Like yesterday, he had to bring the BIG hand soap bottle from the bathroom cupboard and set it up next to the sink for mommy to fill it up in her small bottle. He still remembered how heavy it was!

At home, there was no TV! He was feeling sad, when someone knocked on the door and started setting up some stuff of their own at the fire place! The magician was here and he told them great stories.. Later he gave them lots of colors and paper to paint with! His younger brother and he painted a lot and messed up their pajamas. Still nothing, every one seemed to be pleased with them!

The Magician

The Magician and his puppets

The grandparents who were visiting were obviously pleased as always, but the daddy and the mommy seemed to enjoy the mess this time around.

Soon, it felt like it was time to go to bed. Mo offered to check into his room without much prodding.

“Did you have a great day Mo?!”

“Yes Daddy! Daddy, do you know what I can do?! I can say, One, two and three up to Ten in Spanish! UNO DOS TRES CUATRO CINCO SEIS SIETE OCHO NUEVE DIEZ .. “

In one breath! Ah!

“Great, that’s lovely Mo! Did Ms. Massey teach you that?!”

“No daddy, Hunter did! He is from Puerto Rico! Daddy, can we go to Puerto Rico?!”

Puerto Rico

Holidays in Puerto Rico

“Yes, of course, I will book a cruise tomorrow and we all can go!
Now, you go to sleep because the doctor called and now they have your favorite orange color cast ready (for your broken right arm). He told me they can put it on you tomorrow if you can be there early.”

And off he went, his small inflatable tent waiting for him in his room. It was going to be his makeshift home for that night, and the glow stars on its roof made for a perfect night! Mo soon went to sleep smiling.. Tucked in between his favorite Coca and his new best favorite Bumble Bee.

Now, do you all remember the shooting star that night?!
Santa was on his sledge flying from one home to another, delivering his packages and gifts to all the kids of the world. And when Mo saw him up in the sky he mistook him for a shooting star! Santa figured out what would be the best toy for him, so he got him one!

Do you know what Mo got?!
A dream catcher..!!

THE END!

***O***

Dream big and persevere.. And, you can be a Rock Star if you want to be!

Good night kiddos!

Sun rays and the Dreamcatcher

Sun rays and the Dreamcatcher

The story ends here, but the Dream catcher comes with an expiry date, the kids figure it out eventually as schools reopen and rules get enforced as usual – Home and school, there is no escape! :) However, they don’t stop dreaming, and this time, they just wish for their next dream holiday to come by sooner.. !!

Wikipedia says, “Luscious dreams pass through the center hole to the sleeping person. The bad dreams are trapped in the web, where they perish in the light of dawn.” The DREAM CATCHER has been recently made popular in populist culture by some New Age groups..

2010: A Plot for the Plot

9 Dec

“Fascinating” would not even describe the enthusiasm of Liis Variku, the 18-year-old from Estonia.. As her teacher for English Literature and Comprehension, I was intrigued from day one.. Now, after 12 months, Liis was in Finland, and once again she had done me proud.. As I heard her presentation for The European World CLASS Culture Expo 2010, even this late in December, my blood felt warm and I was glued to the television screen.. The Israeli salad that my wife served me as I watched was great on my senses.. cucumber, onion, capsicum, black beans, chick peas, tomato – and a tingling dressing..

**O*-*O*-*O**

The first time I saw her at NorthView High, she had told me of her goal to be an English teacher in her native Estonia.. She also had another project at hand.. The Exhibition of People in Dec, ’10 in Finland, which partially funded her stay in the US was a showcase of people living in 2010 in a certain part of the world.. She was to document the life of 5 people that she would befriend in the US.. The final act was to be accumulated from willing participants, complete with visuals and verbal or written permission from the interviewees..

FIVE interviews..? And in-depth personal at that? An average American would make less than 9 (8.6 to be exact) number of close friends in his/her lifetime.. And Liis had an year to make 5.. I had wondered if that was possible, for I did not even know the name of the great-grandfather who lived next door to mine, let alone if he was dying..

Today, carefully and deliberately, she was presenting her work..

“#1 is Kushi Ganzorig comes from Mongolia, where the horse to human ratio is 14:1. She had come to the States on a two-year Au Pair program.. One that enabled her to work as a nanny/cook for an American family in exchange for a  monthly allowance, shelter and the assistance required to attend an evening community program for learning English. I soon found out that Kushi was a victim of abuse at her employer’s household.. The husband/father of the house, had repeatedly stole her underwear from the washing machine and also sexually assaulted her without the knowledge of the Lady of the house.. He blackmailed her for 6 months, before she confided in me.. Today, she dreams of being a teacher and helping kids better communicate with the world and she sees English as a means to do it.. In so many ways, her resilience and her will power reminds of a great leader and an inspiring woman in Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi. (pronounced Awn Sahn Sue Chee)”

When I first heard about her from Liis, I was embarrassed to realize that Kushi did not tell me anything personally, even though she had been my student much before Liis came around.. And I had to know the reason, why would she be forthcoming to a man again and trust someone with a p*nis anymore.. I mentioned it to a lawyer friend, and asked Kushi if I should arrange for her to go home.. And her decision did not surprise me, because she declared that so much was at stake..

“#2 is Marina Camacho, a strong-willed petite Latino girl.. If the word IRONY had a look and feel, her life would have to be put on a pedestal and be surrounded by glass windows and put on display.. She has recently lost her family in unfathomable tragedy.. When Chile and the world along with it, cheered and celebrated the lives of 33 miners stuck underground for more than two months, she had a personal reason to stay glued to the news, one of the miners was her own brother-in-law.. The day she heard his voice when he was pulled out in a makeshift life capsule from inside the earth some 2250  feet below, the feeling was ecstatic.. Life was great.. Her family was now preparing for an endless season of happiness, when tragedy struck less than 72 hours after he got home.. A giant sink hole swallowed the house the entire family of  aunts, uncles and cousins had gathered to celebrate the safe return of her sister’s husband..”

Marina had later found out that rescuers dug the bodies of her parents and relatives to find that they had laid out a meal for 14 family members and were probably having their lunch at the time of their deaths..

“#3 Isabella Tudor is a great girl: As a part-time waitress at the nearby Italian restaurant, I had befriended her and encouraged her to reveal her story.. The girl is from Moldova and we soon found out that we both had crazy plans for our futures..

Bella tries to be keep it business as usual, because she cannot let the pain come in the way of her dreams.. In April, when news of her father’s illness reached her, she gathered up her savings, 2000 dollars in total, bought a flight ticket to Moldova to be with him during his last days.. The volcanic ash clouds over the commercial airspace in Northern Europe indefinitely stalled air traffic for days.. The ash clouds were as a result of volcanic eruptions beneath an ice cap in Iceland, and the travel disruption was said to be the highest since the Second World War.. After hopping over multiple  airports for 26 days, all along with little communication with the outside world, Bella made it in time only to touch the ice cold grave stone of her father..”

Bella would joke with Liis, that next time she would prefer to be in a flight diversion situation because someone illegibly scribbled the word ‘bomb’ on the mirror in the bathroom.. That issue is national security, so it would be an emergency and the passengers would at least be treated with great care and respect for the fear of setting off a bomb!

“#4 is Kyle Gopichund from India: As part of the project, I have 5 people to introduce to you.. And the 4th one has to be Mr. Gopichund, my English teacher in the US and my mentor! Some people just refuse to live a nondescript life..! And Kyle is one of them, he wrote and published Essays to repudiate the popular theory that the Media was imposing on the general public.. That the holy land of Ayodhya was a point of contention and how Indians were divided on who should get the land, Muslims or Hindus.. He presented some interesting research that the young of India did not care as much about religious and communal divisions than their own cell phones and the current movie schedules of their favorite Bollywood movies in the nearest multiplexes.. Of course, the Supreme Court of India eventually ruled their landmark decision of dividing the land between both Muslims and Hindus, which Kyle thought was a great secular ruling that uplifts the principles of Indian Democracy!”

And then as if she was addressing me directly, she said, “Sir, if you are listening, this one is for you! The Finns are warm and friendly people, and they have bidets in their toilets.. And it sure does feel good! Ha ha.. I am looking forward to the year 2011 with your inspirations and your tutelage, I hope to land a teaching position in Estonia soon..”

At that moment, I did not have to listen to who her number 5 would be.. For me, it was Liis Variku..

#5 Liis Variku from Estonia: Liis was barely here for an year, but she left me with a lot of memories.. I remember having conversations and debates over coffee at our midtown condo balcony, looking down at the highway traffic right below us.. My wife would occasionally join in, but would mostly be recording us and making fun of our worldly views.. Liis would pose difficult questions, what the psychology of fear meant, and if the quotient of fear was greater in public places when surrounded by 1000s of strangers or while sitting at home in the company of family and friends losing away the few remaining hours of life to an incurable cancer.. The stampede at the Khmer Water Festival in Phnom Penh, Cambodia – where thousands of people in panic ran across a bridge to save themselves from the rising waters of the river killing around 400 people crushing them under their feet as they ran..

When asked to write a current affairs essay, she had written about the The Deepwater Horizon oil platform that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico and how many thousands of people lost their livelihoods for generations to come.. She wrote about how the world treats America and its richness and how poor people and their misery was shoved off in the back burner both by the Media and BP(The British Petroleum Company) who were playing with people’s sloppy memories.. All in the name of quick turnaround for any claims and financial help requests that they were processing daily – 20 BILLION dollars to be given away and efficiently – That was the agenda, right??!!

All through, the young girl had taught me one great lesson of all.. That there were a lot of people along with her in the United States of America, because it was the land of opportunities where they did not have to give up their dreams so easily.. I was often dumbfounded at the profound nature of her perspectives, but I realized that I shared this sentiment with her and all of them!

She finally concluded her presentation to a standing ovation, with this,

The world in 2010 has seen floods in India, China, Caracas, Pakistan.. a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti.. And some lives have changed forever.. We have also seen the eye-catching spectacle of The 2010 Winter Olympics Whistler, Canada and the breathtaking feats of India for the 2010 Commonwealth games in New Delhi, India.. Here is to hoping that THE YEAR 2011 will be a little better year for the World than ever before.. !!

Is Life a better fictional author than any of us..? Is the idea of a great fiction generally overrated?! Does LIFE always seem to have a better plot for a story??

Are there any stories that you have heard or read this year, that have made a deep and permanent change in you?! What news did you hear in 2010, that you thought was the most impactful, and may be fit the thought of Mark Twain, “Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn’t.”

Bring The Boys Back Home!

28 Nov

Chad felt the need to take care of himself and ask for help only when he absolutely needed it.. ALWAYS.. They were getting late that evening, but if Pat did not want him to see broken up and torn, that is what she had to do, let him do things his way..

Even without ingesting soap water, he was bubbly she would joke, but that wouldn’t deter him from rinsing the last drop of soap water with such paranoia that it was annoying to watch or hear the water run out in the kitchen sink.. Then he filled up his refillable cup with beer and headed out to the garage.

“It is a ripoff to buy beer at these events, 6 dollars, I’d get a 6 pack for it, ALMOST!”

Agree Chad, but if we miss the concert, it is a 200$ loss and that is worse than the 6 bucks we just saved on your drink.. Right?! And, what are you searching for now?! Isn’t it time to leave??

“Almost there honey, I am just looking for Romeo’s tag..”

Looking? Ha ha.. OK OK, you know I am pulling your leg right, come on, here it is, I think he was playing with it when you took it off of him..

And now it was Romeo’s turn to resist wearing it, it was almost as if he knew what the big bulky leash read, “I am working, don’t pet me

“Are you sure you don’t want to take the train??”

No, no train, I remember the last time on our way back.. The concert crowd was drunk kids, out of control and out-of-bounds.. Oh, can’t deal with that rowdiness!

As they sat in the car and closed the garage door behind them, Pat spoke,

“Thanks for the evening, you know it means a lot! And better, Roger (Waters) is doing The Wall!

Chad…………. Matt would have been thrilled, don’t you think?!”

The phone rang in her sweater pocket..

“It’s Alyssa.

Hi Sweetie, yes, dad and I are headed to the concert now, wait, what, sure, but why? OK, hey, you are the one who is cutting me..!! OK, talk to you later honey.

She wants me to call her right after the concert, and why can’t she tell me what she is up to, right now?! I don’t get this girl! What do you think it is??

“You should give her a break, you just have to wait 2 hours to hear what she has to say! Be reasonable, Patricia!”

PinkFloydTheWall - LP

PinkFloyd - TheWall, 1979

A 30 year long patient of RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa) and with 85% blindness in both eyes, Chad had lived with blindness since the day he turned 20.. But, he was the love of her life and the best part, he shared the same tastes in Progressive Rock as she did and loved listening to PinkFloyd on LP records. 9 months after they first laid eyes on each other, his world turned dark with the genetic disease, but that only fostered their love for each other.. He was such a cool guy, he even agreed to be the best man for Alyssa’s ex-fiance in his wedding.. He was just that way, never found anything or anyone troubling.. So, it was not surprising that he was not annoyed by Alyssa’s little mysterious phone call..

“Atlanta traffic is a nightmare, thanks to my eyes, I don’t have to drive. Disabilities bring some advantages.. I can drink beer in the car and of course, like Seinfeld mentions, there is the ability to park in the best parking spots in the lot. He he”

**O*-*O*-*O**

For the cheerful Chad that he was, since the beginning of the year, he had been hiding a hole in his heart.. 13 months ago, to this day, he lost his son, his best friend and beer buddy, Matt, in the Combat Operation at Camp Keating in Kamdesh, Afghanistan. After months of investigations, the Military commanders would come to a conclusion that the there was a systematic breakdown in ground level operation tactics. That was all they got, after months of rejections and appeals for hearing with the Government.. Of course, they got the rugged boots that he wore, the day he died.. Chad would later learn a few more details from leaked US Military Internal investigative reports on the internet. His boy had survived 110 degrees of heat and humidity for 10 days in the camp with ONLY a dozen bottles of drinking water between 22 soldiers – But who was to know that the Taliban was waiting for his own service men to fail him.

The Wall Concert 2010

The 40 feet high WALL of 'bricks' is gradually built between the band and audience from the beginning to the end of the concert

**O*-*O*-*O**

In an hour, they reached the grand Philips Arena for the indoor concert. The cardboard bricks wall signifying the theme of the album the band was to play – THE WALL, the band members obscure in the big black backdrop, the orchestra for the sound effects and the ensemble, the stunned crowd.. should make up for a great evening, she thought..

As the concert began, Roger started with his famous words with the most electrifying pyrotechnics that any 4th of July Celebrations would fall short of..

“We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control”,

Faces and numbers began scrolling on the wall from projection equipment in the middle of the arena.. When they showed the date of release of the album, she momentarily thought of her Matt, who was born on the same date 31 years ago. In her long life, Pat had seen it all, love, loss, belonging, depression.. But tonight was special, she realized, it will all be soon over, and she was with the two most special people in her life.. Chad and Romeo.. And she decided to make the most of it!

Wedontneednoeducation

To the Teacher we say: We don’t need no education

A little later into the concert, the 10 minute break was a much-needed one.. As she assisted Chad to the front of the line in the men’s toilet station, someone screamed from behind..

“Do you think his pee is a pressing issue than mine.. and just because he is a blind, it doesn’t make it any special..!!!!!!”

Karma, would come and bite you in the back, you asshole..“, she muttered under her breath, because she had to know what she was getting into when they ventured into a Rock concert. At the corner, blocking the way, a couple with tattoos and ear and lip piercing were kissing each other..

How on earth would that be convenient..?? Ugh..” Again, she went about her business of escorting Chad to the family restroom..

Homelessman

In the order of priority: Booze, Hookers, Food, Shelter

Getting back and finding their way to the seats proved tough. The crowd was hardly in its seats, because the music was such!

“Will some woman in this desert land
Make me feel like a real man?”

And, there she was standing.. her heart thumping to the heavy metal beats of ‘Young Lust‘.. She thought every famous man in history should start like this, preach love and lust to the masses, then spill words of peace and brotherhood in their ripe years.. That should work, and the concept might be universal.. To get popular, take a path, a more populist path, then when people are arrested and willing to hear you, tell them what you exactly intended to! That is why Roger Waters was a Hero to her..

The rickety makeshift stairs with extra chairs, were quaking with rhythmic effects and that was sending shocks up her body through her spine.. At 49, she was having an orgasm in the middle of 15000 spectators, while Romeo was licking her feet and she was rubbing shoulders with a dozen strangers, while swaying and clapping to the music.. She was a little embarrassed to go through such emotions..

The energy was palpable, the crowd was young, the enthusiasm was wild and the sound effects gave goose bumps.. Roger bent down as if in a head bow, like a Namaste, and sang the most real song of them all.. “Bring The Boys Back Home”..

“Don’t leave the children on their own, no, no.
Bring the boys back home.”

And then it happened, as the concert came to a close..The ‘helicopter’ lights whirring above and the light shining on her head.. The crowd went crazy and before she could dismiss the attention, Pat saw the picture on THE WALL.. It read the words, that she would remember forever..

Sgt. Maj. Matthew Patterson: We salute, an US National Hero, a man of bravery and extraordinary achievements.

His dying words, as his ammunition was out run and the only communication to the outside world was a satellite phone.. ‘I’m telling you that if they don’t get here f****** soon, we’re all going to f****** die‘, he shouted, under heavy sounds of gunfire.

**O*-*O*-*O**

Pat realized the crowd was cheering for Matt and so she thrived in the honor and hugged Chad with tears of joy and overwhelming sorrow..!!

That night she found out that Alyssa had sent in her brother’s details to The Wall tour campaign to be honored in a dedication segment, called “Fallen Loved Ones. And for that she was grateful that Alyssa cut her conversation short earlier in the evening. The surprise was truly worth the experience.. And for that she was honored and proud of the son .. and the daughter..

Dedication: To each and every service man – past, present and future – in any part of the world, and to family and friends of them, who pray for their safe return every day.. With love and gratitude for their sacrifices..

A few of my beloved readers have asked me time and again to help them draw a line, pointing the difference between fact and fiction in my stories.

Pat: Inspired by my husband’s love for PinkFloyd;

Chad and Romeo: Inspired by two real life characters in my life;

Roger Waters and The Wall: As a first time attendee to his concert in 2010, fueled and inspired the story.

Camp Keating in Kamdesh, Afghanistan: Real life tragic incident involving US Military Personnel.

Story line: 100% fiction.

Compassion takes a road trip..

21 Nov

.. A long winding one..

***O***

How are you all?!?!

I had deliberated just a little bit whether to post or not today as per my regular Sunday late night schedule :)

It is festive mood all around, and what better way to spend the holiday season (here in the US and everywhere in the world!) with a few familiar faces instead of with our computers.. ;) And as “Indians” we have to celebrate says the Kindergartner at home.. Before the situation gets tricky, I have to download the list of things to buy for ‘the feast’.. :))

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!
